Mentorship Opportunity - Occupational Health and Safety Administrator

Occupational Health and Safety Administrator

About the role

The successful candidate of this mentorship opportunity will work with a consultant OHS specialist over the course of 1 year to help develop and implement various health and safety/emergency management protocols across our organization. This role will be responsible for leading the Occupational Health and Safety Committee and eliciting participation from all departments.

It is expected that the successful candidate will have an earnest desire to successfully obtain the National Health and Safety Administrator (NHSA) designation from the BC Construction Safety Association.

Duties and Responsibilities

Program and Services Administration

  • Arranges virtual OHS Committee meetings and record and distribute meeting notes to members
  • Supports the OHS Committee by advising the Committee on their written Rules of Procedure document
  • Elicits participation from all department and assists departments in ensuring the information recorded from the OHS Committee meetings is communicated to all department members via department meetings
  • Updates and maintains the Emergency Management Plan by creating strategic relationships with all stakeholders such as community, volunteers, employees, industry, and government agencies
  • Creates and maintains a list of supplies for the Emergency Operations Centre EOC
  • Facilitates emergency management training and exercises
  • Assists and encourages various departments to develop and maintain safe work standards and procedures
  • Assists in incident investigation to determine incident cause and make recommendations for prevention
  • Assists in workplace inspections to identify and control potential risks in the workplace


Other Related Duties

  • Engages with the SFN community to understand current needs within the SFN community
  • Participates as the SFN representative in collaborative partner networks (Peace River Regional District and Indigenous and Northern Affairs)
  • Researches and writes funding proposals to secure additional funding as it relates to this position and health and safety in general
  • Acts as a community role model and advocate for health and safety

Qualifications and Skills

  • A keen interest, willingness and ability to enrol in courses and work towards the National Health and Safety Administrator (NHSA) designation from BCSA
  • Minimum of High-school education and aptitude test may be requested to ensure the successful mentee has the ability to complete the NHSA exams
  • Facilitation skills and public speaking considered an asset
  • Knowledge of SFN community, heritage, culture, social structure, language and traditions
  • Research skills including the ability to interpret and explain emergency management policies and laws
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Maintains high level of confidentiality in the handling of information

The OHS Administrator role will be supported by the Consultant for the first year of employment.
