Job Purpose

The Budget Analyst plays a key role on our Finance team as they evaluate budget proposals to determine the optimal allocation of project funds, as well as ensure our compliance with the Financial Administration Law. They are responsible for reviewing budget proposals and requests for funding, evaluating spending needs, conducting cost-benefit analyses, and funder reports, among other duties.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Establish proactive, positive and constructive working relationships with clients and departments
  • Evaluating budget proposals and funding requests
  • Collaborating with department project managers to develop a budget
  • Conducting cost-benefit analyses to determine value
  • Approving or rejecting funding requests
  • Determining whether budget proposals comply with regulations
  • Defending budget recommendations against management
  • Developing a final budgetary agreement with management
  • Monitoring spending to ensure it remains within budget
  • Assist with estimating and forecasting future financial needs
  • Ensuring proper allocation of funds
  • Catalogue client documents using the SFN’s and FAL’s records management requirements
  • Respond to client inquiries related to Standards and FAL matters and processes
  • Assist the Manager of Finance and Accounting in the preparation of the necessary material in advance of meetings with the Director of Operations and Chief and Council
  • Collect necessary data and prepare regular financial reports
  • Where required, provide input into business line strategic planning, and the continual improvement of SFN’s policies, procedures and operations
  • Maintain engagement file documentation in an organized and structured manner, and in accordance with established document management and retention policy
  • Preparation of spending reports to grant funders
  • Other duties as required, which may include:
  • Assisting with analysis of financial policies
  • Financial and statistical collection or other similar technical research
  • Participating on, or contributing to special projects as directed
  • Ensures a positive image and professional working relationship for SFN across all stakeholder groups




  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or related field
  • Alternatively, may consider an Accounting Diploma, or CAFM designation coupled with a minimum of 3 years of accounting experience


  • Preference will be given to those with experience in a First Nations environment
  • Strong knowledge of accounting standards and reporting frameworks – PSAS,IFRS and ASPE
  • Experience with the accounting system Adagio or Sage 50 is considered an asset, as is experience with CaseWare and Jazz-it
  • Experience managing budgets
  • Proficiency in data analysis and statistical forecasting
  • Excellent mathematical aptitude
  • Detail oriented with strong analytical, time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Must possess a high level of moral judgment for handling confidential information

Work Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in the band office with hours of work set as 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursdays
  • Travel may be required within SFN community
  • Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals
