Job Purpose
The primary focus of this position is to assist the Teacher/Principal in fostering the intellectual and social development of children in the elementary school and to incorporate cultural language and teachings into the existing program. This position works under the guidance of Teacher/Principal in the school; assisting in the education, development, and training of students who need additional support to learn and succeed.
Duties and Responsibilities
Program and Student Support
- Under the guidance of the certified teacher, develops and presents daily (oral) Cree Language and Culture and pre-kindergarten programming.
- Develops short- and long-term plans for the language and culture program.
- Assesses, evaluates, and reports on student progress.
- Provides a year plan and thematic cultural units.
- Assists the Teacher/Principal at the Muskoti Elementary School with subject area, projects and activities relating to the program, including preparing lesson plans and delivery to children.
- Creates language and cultural content lesson plans, including teaching the Cree language and cultural content to students and evaluating learnings.
- Works alongside the school team to integrate language and cultural content across the curriculum.
- Assists in the supervision and training of students in the development of life skills and performance of daily activities.
- Monitors for safety of the children, including supervision at playtime, gym, lunch, and recess.
- Provides ongoing and regular communication about the program to the supervising teacher. Information about a student’s learning development and progress is treated as privileged and only shared for the purpose of program planning and in the context of that planning.
- Oversees classroom activities, delivers lesson plans and ensures continued student learning.
- Assists in developing arranging and supervising curricular and extra-curricular activities within and outside the school building, including field trips.
- Assists in preparing and arranging lesson materials and displays.
Other Duties
- Assists with preparing meals (breakfast and lunch) for students.
- Assists with office and secretarial duties as required.
Required Qualifications and Certifications
- Education Assistant/Early Childhood Education Certification or minimum of 2 years experience with primary and pre-kindergarten children in a learning environment.
- Post-Secondary courses in Indigenous history and contemporary issues is an asset.
- Clear Vulnerable Sector Police Information Check is required
- Valid First Aid Certificate.
- Food Safe Certification.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Classroom teaching experience or related experience with multi-grades.
- Knowledge of Cree language and history is preferred; basic knowledge of FN community including history, traditions, and culture is an asset.
- Knowledge of language arts and math programs as well as assessments currently used is an asset.
- Knowledge of all subjects in the British Columbia curriculum.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff, parents, and community.
- Ability to establish a positive and relaxed learning environment with high expectations for all learners.
- Ability to establish a positive and proactive classroom management system.
- Ability to pass a Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector checks.
- Must possess a high level of moral judgment for handling confidential information.
Work Conditions
- Work is performed primarily in the school facility with hours of work set as 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursdays and 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 on Fridays.
- Inclusive of special events, special supervision, or planning and special meetings required to support cultural and instructional programs outside of the regular work hours.
- Travel may be required within SFN community and surrounding community.
- Manual dexterity required to use desktop computer and peripherals.
Wage Range
- $23.70-$31.20 per hour
