Job purpose

We are a non-profit charity, providing emergency shelter, and support services for women of all ages, with or without children, fleeing from intimate partner violence and abuse. We are a vibrant, collaborative community looking for exceptional people to help us grow as we work towards our mission of ending intimate partner violence. This role is responsible for delivering services intended to provide short-term protective accommodation and outreach supports, on an emergency crisis-intervention basis, to primarily high-risk women and children.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Diffusing any crisis situations that arise during your shift.
  • Ensuring house rules are followed and implemented in a consistent manner.
  • Performing routine cleaning and sanitization.
  • Overseeing and assisting with meal preparations.
  • Ensuring all written materials are secured and all phone calls regarding participants take place in the office.
  • Maintaining strict confidentiality of all information regarding residents in the program.
  • Working as part of a team to organize and hold events that draw in and involve local residents and partners.
  • Working in different environments (both office-based and on the ground), at times best suited to the community (including evenings and weekends).
  • Maintain case notes and participant files and ensure that all reporting requirements are adhered to as outlined by the funder and program for every client interaction.
  • Work collaboratively with community partners in linking clients with needed services.
  • Performs other duties/special projects as assigned.
  • Maintain current knowledge of issues, best practices, and available resources.

Ideal Qualifications and Certifications

  • Undergo and maintain satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • A valid class 5 driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  • Produce and maintain clear Driver’s Abstract
  • First Aid – Level C w/ CPR baby safe
  • Mental Health First Aid
  • Suicide Prevention Training
  • Cultural Competency Training
  • Addictions & Substance use Training
  • Food Safe
  • Crisis Prevention and Intervention Certificate

  • Knowledge of the systematic issues that affect low-income and marginalized people and relevant community, social and health resources, and government services and systems.
  • Knowledge of low barrier resources, harm reduction model, adolescent development, alcohol and drug use issues, mental health issues, sexually exploited youth, and street-involved activities.

  • Familiar with colonialism especially as it applies to Canada, and you understand the impact of the Residential School system and Sixties Scoop
  • You are passionate about the Organization’s mission and understand the current and historical context of the child welfare system in relation to colonization.

Additional Information:

Training will be provided for specific qualifications for this position relevant to the requirements of this position which may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Crisis intervention training
  • Working with victims of Trauma
  • Suicide prevention training
  • Selfcare training

Work Conditions

  • The position requires the incumbent to have the ability to function independently, and frequently under pressure while managing multiple concurrent projects and deadlines
  • On-call coverage as agreed upon with Supervisor
